Despite what many people think, it is possible to get pregnant without having penetrative sex. This is particularly true for women who are not able to have sexual intercourse due to conditions such as vulvodynia or vaginismus.
There are also deliberate ways to become pregnant that do not involve sex, such as artificial insemination and IVF.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
In order to get pregnant, sperm must enter the vagina and fertilize an egg. This can happen through non-penetrative sex such as when a man’s penis touches or comes near the vagina. This can happen even if the woman uses contraceptive methods such as condoms or the rhythm method. It can also occur if the man’s semen is splashed on or into the vagina or vulva canal. However, this is extremely rare because sperm cells can only survive outside the body for a short period of time.
Normally, during intercourse, millions of sperm are deposited in the vagina in the hope that one will fertilize an egg. However, for this to occur, the sperm must make it through the woman’s cervix and fallopian tubes. This is not an easy task for sperm, and only about 5% of them are able to do so.
IUI can be used as a way to get pregnant without sex. It is a simple procedure that only takes a few minutes. During the procedure, your healthcare provider inserts a speculum in your cervix. Next, he or she will place a catheter into your uterus, which is the site of the egg. The sperm is then injected into your uterus through the catheter. Once the sperm fertilizes an egg, the doctor will give you progesterone, which increases the chances of implantation.
Intrauterine insemination with ovulation induction (IUI/Ovulation induction)
In order to get pregnant without sex, the sperm must enter the uterus. The chances of this happening are higher if the man stimulates the penis to ejaculate close to the vaginal opening or vulva area, or if it happens slightly inside the vagina. This is known as splash pregnancy, and it increases the chances of conceiving even more when it occurs during the ovulation cycle. This method of conception is called ART (assisted reproductive technology).
It is also possible to get pregnant if semen enters the vulva or vagina area without penetration. This is usually the case when couples use the rhythm or calendar method of conception, and it can also happen if a woman has an intact hymen and does not have penetrative sex, but uses contraception instead.
For IUI, a sample of your partner’s semen is collected by the doctor and then “washed,” which separates the motile normal sperm from those that are poorer quality. This makes it easier for the sperm to find their way to the egg during the ovulation cycle. A trigger injection of human chorionic gonadotropin is then administered to help time the IUI procedure with the ovulation cycle. The sperm is then placed in the uterus through a catheter, which is connected to a tubing which runs from a needle inserted into the cervix.
IVF
While sex is typically seen as the best way to get pregnant, it’s not the only way. Conception can still happen without penetration if semen makes its way to the vaginal opening or cervix, a process known as ejaculation. Semen can survive outside of the body for up to a few minutes, and as long as it’s in a warm and moist environment, it has a chance of reaching and fertilizing an egg.
For this to occur, the woman needs to be in the fertility window, which begins five days before ovulation and ends after ovulation. A doctor or fertility specialist can help a woman achieve this by tracking her menstrual cycle and inducing ovulation with medication.
Another method is artificial insemination, also called IVF, which involves mixing processed sperm with eggs that have been retrieved from the ovaries. The doctor then implants one or more of the fertilized embryos into your uterus.
IVF is a bit more complicated than other methods of getting pregnant without sex, and it can take time to work. But it’s a great option for couples who are in the process of trying to conceive and may not be able or want to have sexual intercourse. In addition, IVF is a good option for women who have problems with their fallopian tubes or uterus.
Surrogacy
A growing number of women want to have biological children but do not have the physical ability or desire to carry a pregnancy to term. In such cases, surrogacy is a solution.
A woman who wants to become a gestational carrier (g-carrier) will take fertility medication to help her produce multiple eggs. These eggs are then fertilized in a laboratory setting with the intended parent’s sperm. The embryos are then implanted in the g-carrier’s uterus. She will carry the baby for the duration of the pregnancy and then hand it over to the original parents.
This type of surrogacy is best for women who are 25 to 40 years old and have already completed their own families. G-carriers must be physically and emotionally healthy and able to maintain a positive relationship with their surrogate child’s parents. The legal process for surrogacy varies by state and requires the assistance of a reproductive endocrinologist and a surrogacy attorney.
If you’re interested in learning more about getting pregnant without sex, start by consulting with a fertility specialist. Whether you have a medical condition such as a uterus with an abnormal shape or a septate uterus, previous surgery, or a hysterectomy that leaves you with no uterus, there are many options for you to consider. You may also be a good candidate for IVF, which uses clean sperm to fertilize your eggs in a lab setting.
